Shell condenada na Nigéria, tenta subverter acusação a seu favor

A gigante empresa petrolífera Royal Dutch Shell, aceitou no dia 8 de Junho pagar 15,5 milhões de dólares na sequência de um processo extra-judicial pela sua alegada cumplicidade na morte de nove activistas que lutavam contra as suas actividades no delta do Níger, entre eles o autor e activista ambiental Ken Saro-Wiwa. O caso alega ainda que a Shell promoveu graves violações dos direitos humanos ao ser cúmplice da morte e tortura de activistas, para além de severos danos ambientais e sociais no povo Ogoni, que habita aquela região rica em petróleo. Apesar de tudo, A Shell publicita no seu sítio na web o pagamento dos 15,5 milhões de dólares como um gesto de acção humanitária, omitindo todas as informações de que fora acusada e tentando encerrar um episódio marcado por quase cinco décadas de violência e prejuízos ambientais irreversíveis com mais uma lavagem de imagem da multinacional.
